Columbia is mourning the death Oct. 18, 2009 of perhaps its oldest resident, 108-year-old Louise "Lady" Johnson...

Known affectionately as "The Matriarch of Maplewood," Louise Johnson was a fixture of this Rosewood street for 55 years. Many years after watching her neighbors grow up, move away and return to Rosewood, the Matriarch turned to them to watch out for her. Neighbors and close friends Rosemary Macintosh and Chris Boswell shared their stories of this incredible woman just weeks before she passed away. Madge Major and I also sat down with Louise herself and caught a glimpse of her tenacious character.

What an amazing woman "Lady" seems to have been. I read the article about her in The State just the other day. Thanks Madge and Alyssa for sharing her story.

Lady was a gem in our community. Thanks Madge and Alyssa for adding her voice to the story that appeared in the State Paper. We were so fortunate that you were able to capture this story in such a timely manner. I hope that BGTime can identify and capture the stories of many other seniors who have unique perspectives to share about their lives and our community.

Senior citizens in our community have much to contribute to the civic dialogue. However, many seniors lack the skills and opportunities necessary to use all the tools available to them to tell their stories. The BGTIME program was developed to help bridge this divide between senior citizens and digital media. More
