We have not had the best weather for golf this winter between the rain, cold and snow; therefore, most of us have gotten a little soft and out of shape.
To prepare, we must realize that even though we are riding carts when playing, there is still a lot of walking. With all the rain in December and January, many days have been cart path only. This means walking from the cart path out to the ball, while carrying two or three clubs. It is difficult to judge the distance until you get to see what the lie of the ball is like and celebrate what golf club to use. The elevation and wind must be part of the equation to be considered. The ball will usually be on the opposite side of the fairway increasing our walk...
So we must start walking to get our legs in shape so we do not run out of steam on the back nine. To help our arms and hands, carry a wedge or putter with you to swing back and forth with one hand only. This will strengthen the fingers and wrist as well as the forearm pronators and rotator cuffs in the shoulders. One handed swinging of the wrist, as well as raising and lowering of the arms will help the proper action of the arm swing and wrist action.
Wearing a glove on your top hand will increase the traction of the grip allowing you to hold the club lightly, not tightly. There may be some slippage of your hands, especially on off center contact, causing blisters and calluses.
Check the grips on your golf clubs and replace if more than one year old. If you practice a lot, maybe your favorite clubs will be the only ones to change. I have found that many players have clubs with grips too small, so get some help getting the right size and the newest modern material for traction and control.
